The electrical lighting industry is experiencing a major shift in lighting with the advent of the LED light. LED stands for Light-Emitting Diode. First used in 1962 the LED is now a very high efficient light source which uses electroluminescence to product a very bright white light. The lamps now are manufactured for a wide range of uses replacing the current A19 ‘light bulb’ which we are all familiar, to spot lights and pathway light bulbs. Although these lamps tend to be more expensive to purchase they use less electricity - a 3 watt LED G8 lamp is equivalent to a 20 watt lamp, a 7.5 watt LED MR16 is equivalent to a 50 watt halogen spot light & a 9.8 watt LED A19 is equivalent to a 60 watt lamp. In addition to low electrical use most LED’s are dimmable and have an expected lamp life of over 25,000 hours. The combination of pleasant light, low wattage and long lamp life are making the LED lamp a very popular alternative to incandescent, halogen and florescent lamps.
